Day Four

Today I’m going to talk about the parable of the wheat and the tares found in Matthew 13.

24 Another parable He put forth to them, saying: “The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field; 25 but while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat and went his way. 26 But when the grain had sprouted and produced a crop, then the tares also appeared. 27 So the servants of the owner came and said to him, ‘Sir, did you not sow good seed in your field? How then does it have tares?’ 28 He said to them, ‘An enemy has done this.’ The servants said to him, ‘Do you want us then to go and gather them up?’ 29 But he said, ‘No, lest while you gather up the tares you also uproot the wheat with them. 30 Let both grow together until the harvest, and at the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, “First gather together the tares and bind them in bundles to burn them, but gather the wheat into my barn.”’” -Matthew 13:24-30

As I was reading this parable, the Holy Spirit highlighted verse 25 to me.  “…while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat and went his way”.

“…while men slept…”

The farmer sowed good seed into his field, seed that would produce good crop. Yet he went to sleep and the enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat. The farmer left a window of opportunity for the enemy to come in, and he  jumped on that opportunity and corrupted the good work the farmer had began.

So, are there any areas of your heart that are sleeping? Are there places in your heart that have fallen asleep and therefore have become dulled or numbed to the conviction of the Holy Spirit and are giving the enemy access to corrupt the good seed you are planting? I know I’ve got some deep heart searching to do. I want to make sure I am fully awake so that I can stand in the whole the armor of God (Ephesians 6:10-18) and fight against the enemy’s attempts to corrupt the good seed I have planted and continue to plant.

11 And do this, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep… let us cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armor of light. -Romans 13:11-12
